Styling your own wedding hair? Five things to get you started

While it may feel daunting, stepping up to the challenge of styling your own wedding hair can be surprisingly satisfying. Whether you are a styling novice, or experienced with a pair of tongs, it can be done with a bit of preparation and the right products.

Here are five things to help you get started:

  1. Pick a simple style. It’s important to have a clear idea of the style you want, this will help you search specifically for tutorials and how-to guides. Search for simple styles, for example, a low bun with loose hair framing your face, or gentle waves with a side clip behind one ear.

  2. YouTube is your friend. There are thousands of online hair tutorials to help you achieve your style step by step. I like Alex Gaboury for modern and simple style tutorials, plus she’s easy to follow. Spend time looking around, you’ll find something that works for you.

  3. Involve a friend. Having a buddy to help you decide on a style, or even jump in and style it with you can be a great help - plus, having an assistant may calm some nerves on the big day!

  4. Get the right products. Good hair prep is essential. To keep it simple, there are three main areas - 1) the base, get the foundation right with either a volumel enhancing mousse or a pre-styling ointment to smooth, 2) the texture, make styling easier with a texturising spray or even dry shampoo, and 3) lock it in, keep everything in place with a good hair/finishing spray. There are lots of products out there, in my experience these would be the three essential items if I had to pick.

  5. Accessorise it up. Wearing a glamorous hairpiece, clip or even a rose-crown, will always enhance your hairstyle and create the bridal look you’re after. Even if it’s as simple as little individual pearls pinned into a bun, it will add a lovely finishing touch. Find what works for the style you’ve chosen and practise attaching the piece before the wedding day.

With the right preparation you can achieve a beautiful look for your wedding, while learning a new skill along the way! Allow yourself enough time for the styling so you feel relaxed, and you never know, you may just enjoy yourself.
